As you approach the United Nations building in New York it is very impressive. The most striking vision as you approach is the flags of all the different countries who are members of the United Nations. The flags are arranged in alphabetical order. Tourists that visit the United Nations will walk in and feel immediately as if they belong. Everybody is very friendly there and actually as you walk through the gates of the United Nations you are actually leaving the United States and entering a place where everybody is united with the same aim to bring peace between the nations. |

In the lobby of the United Nations there are often exhibits on display. An example of one exhibit that was recently displayed was "Cartoon Art of World Peace." On the east side of the lobby there is the magnificent Marc Chagall stained glass memorial to the United Nation's 2nd Secretary General, Dag Hammarskjold.
The United Nations headquarters is comprised of a number of buildings including the Secretariat Tower, the domed General Assembly Hall, the Dag Hammerskjold Library and the Conference and Visitors Center.
The gardens of the United Nations are also very impressive with a number of important sculptures including the "Knotted Gun" which was a gift from the Luxembourg government and a gift from the Soviet Union which is a sculpture depicting "Let us Beat Swords into Plowshares." A piece of the Berlin wall also stands in the United Nations Garden.
Other famous artworks in the United Nations Headquarters include the Japanese peace bell which is actually rung on the vernal equinox and at the opening of each General assembly session. Visiting the United Nations Headquarters is quite awe-inspiring as you walk around and consider the important life-changing decisions that have been made there in the past and have yet to be decided in the future. |
