The Little Mermaid – Copenhagen
Most visitors of Copenhagen want to visit the statue of The Little Mermaid. She is famous throughout the generations. She was "born" to Danish author Hans Christian Andersen in 1837 and since then has been made into a play, a ballet, a movie and she is honored with a statue in Copenhagen at Langeline in Copenhagen Harbor.

The statue of The Little Mermaid was created as a result of Danish brewer Carl Jacobson's excitement after seeing Hans
Beck's ballet The Little Mermaid. Edvard Eriksen was commissioned to create the statue. Eriksen decide to sculpt her at the moment when her fish-tail is turning into legs which makes the statue even more interesting, eternally at the point between life as a mermaid and life as a woman. The Little Mermaid is also a symbol of true love because of what she was willing to risk for the man of her dreams.

Visitors of Copenhagen like to visit the statue because The Little Mermaid and her tragic story are so famous and it is also a very popular photograph spot. Many of the tourist tours of Copenhagen will include a visit to The Little Mermaid.

The Little Mermaid is also a symbol of survival. Her life has been quite rocky as she has come under numerous attacks of vandalism over the years but she will not be destroyed as she sits proudly on her stone at Langeline Pier.

Every year on August 23 women from all over the world jump into the waters surrounding The Little Mermaid celebrating her birthday. The whole quay becomes very festive with music, balloons, flags and a parade and the event is usually televised and shown all over the world. The women who swim around the mermaid usually form the age she will be that year in the water. It is a very special occasion.
